Majority in U.S. Now Say Gays and Lesbians Born, Not Made

Interesting Gallup Poll news today: Majority in U.S. Now Say Gays and Lesbians Born, Not Made

So now just 51% believe something that is pretty obvious from our own personal interactions with people, and fairly well proven from science, anthropology, and observations from the rest of the animals of the world. So it shows how just a few right-wing bigots can continue to keep half of the population of the country believing something that is not consistent with science or human nature.  Only a very few religious leaders are able to do this, and apparently it no longer includes the Pope.

Only a few Tobacco companies were able to convince the majority of the country that smoking didn't cause disease.  Only a few leaders (including Ronald Reagan) were able to hold off on preventing spread of HIV/AIDS with pseudo-science.  Only a very few are able to make people believe that immunizations are dangerous and can cause autism even though there is no science to prove it.  So it must be obvious that only a few coal-industry funded pseudo-science spokesmen can keep much of the population believing that there is no global warming, and if so, it isn't caused by humans.  One other wave of junk science is the rebellion against GMO food.  There is no science that shows that eating GMO food is any more dangerous than any other food.  But people are now believing GMO is dangerous, and laws are being passed and marketing strategies are using non-GMO to help sell products at higher prices.

It seems that there is no easy defense against this sort of phenomena.  The only thing I can see to do is to improve education of our citizens to encourage people to think for themselves.

SHIFT IN ACCEPTANCE SWIFT, DRAMATIC | UTSanDiego.com

John Wilkins wrote an article in Sunday's Union Tribune that described how fast the public changed opinion about gays and gay marriage.

SHIFT IN ACCEPTANCE SWIFT, DRAMATIC | UTSanDiego.com  It was a well-written article.

I agree that the press, media and TV/Movies probably had a significant impact on the public opinion.

It seems to me that the general public may have had a LGBT-friendly opinion, however the way that many questions were asked on polls possibly contributed to the original opinions.  I also think that the right-wing press and religious leaders (many are those call themselves Christian) had been pushing hard to maintain bigotry.

High court subverts initiative process Page 1 of 2 | UTSanDiego.com

This editorial in today's Union Tribune says that the US Supreme Court subverted California's initiative process by their "narrow" invalidation of Proposition 8.  High court subverts initiative process Page 1 of 2 | UTSanDiego.com:I disagree with Harold Johnson. I believe the Supreme Court recognized that the Supporters of Prop 8 had standing as proponents of the proposition. However they could not show that they were harmed if Prop 8 were invalidated. How does someone else getting married (even if a gay marriage) hurt the proponents of proposition 8? It doesn't. It may be against their religion, but it doesn't hurt them! Freedom of Religion requires tolerance of others. If a religion requires women to wear a chador to cover up, then it should be fine for them to do so...but not make other women do it also (as in right-wing Moslem countries). If a religion doesn't believe in gay marriage, those members can avoid gay marriage, but why prevent others? Likewise, if a religion believes that "god creates a souls at conception" and that abortion is killing, then they shouldn't have abortions -- however why should they impose their beliefs on everyone else?

Former foe of gay marriage in California now favors unions - Chicago Tribune

It is very interesting that David Blankenhorn, who fought so very hard against gay marriage, is now in favor of it:

Former foe of gay marriage in California now favors unions - Chicago Tribune:

He somehow believed that if gay marriage was forbidden, it would somehow strengthen heterosexual marriages.  I never understood their argument that they were "protecting the sacred bond of matrimony" by prohibiting gays from also getting married.

When Same-Sex Marriage Was a Christian Rite | Humanity's Team Worldwide

To me, this history of same-sex marriage makes sense as being acceptable to the Christian teachings.

When Same-Sex Marriage Was a Christian Rite | Humanity's Team Worldwide

It would be interesting to understand how, when and exactly why the homophobic attitude of the church started.

Same-sex marriage: It's inevitable - latimes.com

This is a good editorial. I think I agree with the conclusion.
Same-sex marriage: It's inevitable - latimes.com:

It seems that the right-wing churches are shooting themselves in the foot by fighting against it. They are already eliminating 20% or more of the population from being members of their churches --The gays, the parents of gays, the children of gays, the brothers and sisters of gays all will be reluctant members of churches who seem to distort Christ's teachings into anti-gay messages and beliefs
