John Wilkins wrote an article in Sunday's Union Tribune that described how fast the public changed opinion about gays and gay marriage.

I agree that the press, media and TV/Movies probably had a significant impact on the public opinion.
It seems to me that the general public may have had a LGBT-friendly opinion, however the way that many questions were asked on polls possibly contributed to the original opinions. I also think that the right-wing press and religious leaders (many are those call themselves Christian) had been pushing hard to maintain bigotry.
